Insurance
Insurance means paying a small, known amount, called the premium, so that someone else, the insurer, carries a large, uncertain loss if it happens. It is not an investment and not a bet you are trying to win. If nothing goes wrong, the premium was not wasted: it bought you a year of not worrying about that one thing.
Might happen and will happen
Money worries sort into two piles. Some things might happen: a fall that lands you in hospital, a bike accident, a stolen phone. Some things will happen: a bill every month, a payment every year. Money thinking gets calmer once you treat the two piles differently.
How insurance works
For the might-happen pile, insurance is how you protect yourself. You pay the premium, a fixed amount upfront whether or not you ever claim. If the big, unpredictable loss actually happens, the insurer carries most of the cost. This is paying a small known amount so someone else carries a large, uncertain loss.
Insurance and tax
For the will-happen pile, taxes work differently. A tax is a predictable, certain cost of taking part in a working economy. It is closer to a shared bill for shared things than a punishment. The useful question before any money leaves your account is whether the cost is uncertain, which is insurance-thinking, or certain, which is tax-thinking.
What it is not
Insurance is not an investment and it does not promise a return. The terms, exclusions and amounts differ from one policy to another, so read the documents before you buy. Maetis does not give insurance or tax advice.
Two payments side by side (hypothetical numbers)
You see an income tax deduction of ₹6,000 on this month's payslip, the same as every month. Beside it sits a car insurance premium of ₹3,500 for the year, covering an accident that has not happened. You file the tax deduction as a known cost and the premium as protection, and pay both without resentment.
