Liquidity

Liquidity is how quickly and easily something can be turned back into usable cash without losing much of its value. Money in a savings account is highly liquid. A property is not, because selling it can take months and may force a lower price.

Liquidity of an asset

Different ways of holding money differ in how easily they turn back into cash. Savings-like instruments are usually the easiest to take out. Real assets such as property or gold jewellery are often slow to sell. Every option trades something away to gain something else, and easy access is often traded for growth.

Liquidity of a share

A share is liquid when there are plenty of buyers and sellers at any moment. You can trade it quickly, in the quantity you want, close to the last traded price. You can see the signs: a narrow bid-ask spread, a deep order book and high trading volume.

An illiquid share has few buyers and sellers. The gap between the buy and sell price is wide, and a large order can move the price against you.

Why it matters when you need the money

Liquidity is about purpose and time. Money you may need soon belongs where it can be taken out quickly and safely. Money for a far-off goal can sit in something less liquid. An emergency fund exists for exactly this reason: it must be reachable when you need it.

Liquidity and the market

When people say the market has liquidity, they mean trades can be done easily and at fair prices. In a panic, liquidity can dry up: buyers step back and sellers find prices jumping. A share that has hit its circuit limit is an extreme case, where selling may simply not be possible that day.

Two ways to raise ₹50,000 (hypothetical numbers)

Suppose you need ₹50,000 within a week. From a savings account you can withdraw it the same day with nothing lost. If the same ₹50,000 were tied up in a plot of land, you could not sell a part of it quickly, and selling in a hurry might mean accepting a lower price. The amount is the same. The liquidity is not.

Common questions

What is liquidity in simple words?
How easily and quickly you can turn something into cash without losing much value.
What is an illiquid share?
A share with few buyers and sellers, so trading it can be slow or can move the price.
Is high liquidity always better?
Easy access is useful, but it is often traded for growth. The right level depends on what the money is for and when you need it.
How can I tell if a share is liquid?
Look at its trading volume and the bid-ask spread. High volume and a narrow spread suggest it is liquid.
