Gold as an investment

Gold is not useful in a portfolio because it is a good asset on its own. It is useful because its price tends to move differently from shares when markets come under stress. That difference can steady the value of everything you own taken together. It is a pattern seen often, not a rule that always holds.

Why people hold gold

The advice to keep some gold usually arrives after a bad week in the market. The reasoning underneath it is about correlation, which is how closely two things move together. When shares fall and gold holds steady or rises, the two are moving differently, and that gap can steady the whole portfolio.

Judge it by its job, not its speed

You cannot judge gold by asking whether it grows your money fastest, because that is not its job. An asset can earn a place in your holdings for the balance it offers, separate from how quickly it grows. Judging gold by speed alone is like judging a spare tyre by its top speed.

Why it is not always safe

Gold moving differently from shares in past falls is a pattern, not a guarantee. Gold prices can also fall, sometimes for long stretches, and they depend on many things at once, including interest rates and the rupee. No asset behaves the same way in every downturn.

Ways to hold it, and the right question

People hold gold as jewellery, coins, or through funds that track its price. Each has its own costs and charges. Whichever way, the useful question is never whether gold is safe. It is how it moves compared with what you already own, and how sure you can be about that.

Gold in a fall (hypothetical numbers)

Suppose you hold ₹1,00,000 in shares and ₹1,00,000 in gold. The share market falls by nearly 8 percent, taking your shares to about ₹92,000, while gold rises about 2 percent to ₹1,02,000. Your total is ₹1,94,000, a fall of about 3 percent. Had all ₹2,00,000 been in shares, it would have fallen by about 8 percent. The gold did not make money from being good. It helped because it moved differently, this time.

Common questions

Is gold always safe?
No. Gold has often held or gained when shares fell, but not always, and its own price can fall for long periods.
Why do people add gold to a portfolio?
Because its price tends to move differently from shares under stress, which can steady the value of the whole portfolio.
Is gold a good way to grow money fast?
That is not its usual job. It is held for how it moves against other assets, not for speed.
How much gold should I hold?
Maetis does not give advice on amounts. The useful step is to ask how gold moves against what you already hold, and what you need the money for.
