Teaching Children About Money
Children learn money by watching. Not by being told.
- A lecture
- A calm 'not today'
- Teaches less
- Teaches more
A child learns far more about money from watching what a parent actually does with it than from anything anyone ever explicitly teaches them.
In Practice
A child who watches a parent calmly say "we're not buying that today, it's not in the plan" learns something no lecture about budgeting could teach as well.
Generic Example
A child learns table manners far more from watching family meals than from being told the rules once.
Ask yourself
If my child were only allowed to learn about money by watching me, what exactly would they learn?
