Short selling
Short selling means selling a share you do not own yet, with the plan to buy it back later at a lower price and keep the difference. It is a way to gain when a price falls, and it carries the risk of a loss that has no upper limit.
How it works
In an ordinary trade you buy first and sell later. In a short sale the order is reversed: you sell first and buy back later. If the price falls in between, you buy back for less than you sold for and the gap is your gain. If the price rises, you buy back for more and the gap is your loss.
Why the risk is unusual
When you buy a share, the most you can lose is what you paid, because a price cannot fall below zero. When you short a share, the price can keep rising, so the possible loss has no ceiling. That asymmetry is why short positions are watched closely and are usually paired with a stop-loss.
Short selling in India
Rules differ by market segment and are set by SEBI and the exchanges, and they can change. In the cash market, ordinary investors who sell first generally have to buy back within the same trading day. Positions that last longer are usually taken through futures and options.
Short covering
When people who are short buy shares back to close their positions, that buying is called short covering. It can push a price up for a while, which is why a rise on falling open interest is read as short covering and not as fresh buying.
A short sale (hypothetical numbers)
Suppose a trader sells 100 shares at ₹400 without holding them, then buys them back at ₹360. The gain is 100 x (₹400 minus ₹360) = ₹4,000, before charges. If the price had instead risen to ₹460, buying back would cost ₹6,000 more than the sale brought in, and had the price kept rising, the loss could have grown further.
Common questions
- What is short selling in simple words?
- Selling first and buying back later, so you gain if the price falls.
- Why is short selling riskier than buying?
- A bought share can only fall to zero, but a price has no upper limit, so a short position's loss can keep growing.
- What is short covering?
- Buying shares back to close a short position. When many do it together, it can lift the price.
- Can anyone short sell in India?
- It depends on the segment and the current rules. Selling first in the cash market generally has to be settled within the same day, and longer positions use futures and options.
